Sverre Heimdal
Versatile instrument builder from Nore in Numedal
Sverre Heimdal (born 1949) is a skilled and versatile instrument maker from Nore in Numedal, who crafts high-quality Kravik lyres, sjøfløyter, and Hardanger fiddles. Heimdal is the most significant and crucial driving force when it comes to creating new knowledge about the old Kravik lyre from Numedal, which is currently housed at the Norwegian Folk Museum.
This instrument was first documented and drawn by the painter Adolph Tidemann when he visited the Kravik farm in 1848.
In 2016, Heimdal personally financed a C-14 dating of this instrument, which resulted in dating the lyre to the beginning of the 17th century instead of the Middle Ages, as previously assumed. This makes the Kravik lyre the youngest lyre of its kind known in Europe and indicates that similar instruments were likely played in Norway until the 17th century.
Since he started this work in 1989, Heimdal has built copies of the Kravik lyre for numerous musicians and enthusiasts both in Norway and abroad.
Music performed on his instruments has been used by, among others, Einar Selvik in the band Wardruna, both in the movie "Flukt" and the TV series "Vikings."
One of his instruments was given as a gift to Crown Prince Harald and Crown Princess Sonja in 1990 when they visited the Nore and Uvdal municipality, and it hangs in their cabin in Sikkilsdalen. Another instrument was acquired by the Ringve Music Museum in 2015.

.
Heimdal continually conducts new research on the old Kravik lyre to study its details and create versions of the instrument that are even closer to the original.
Until June of this year, he has built a total of 105 Kravik lyres. He has also given several lectures on the instrument for researchers, students, and other interested individuals.
Sverre Heimdal is also an important carrier of the sjøfløyte-building tradition in Numedal, which was preserved until our time by the local craftsman Nils Stuvstad from Flesberg.
Heimdal began building sjøfløyte in the late 1980s at the request of musician Per Midtstigen.
In 1990, he received grants from the Nore and Uvdal municipality and Buskerud County to document flutes after Stuvstad and continue his work on sjøfløyta, which are a folk Norwegian variant of the alto recorder.
Since its inception around 1990, based on this work, Heimdal has built around 150 sjøfløyte and has also written an article about the instrument. In the autumn of 2023, he will have two apprentices in his workshop to continue this unique building tradition.
Heimdal also builds Hardanger fiddles, which he started doing as early as 1978. He has also organized local courses in Hardanger fiddle making. Until 2023, he has built a total of 16 Hardanger fiddles, several of which are considered excellent instruments.
In June 2023, Heimdal received the cultural award from Viken County for his extensive and important work as an instrument maker.
A "kveder" is a person who can perform "stev," someone who has the skill of "kvede." It is a type of vocal folk music.
The words "kvad" and "å kvede" have the same origin.
A "stev" (from Old Norse "stef" meaning "fixed time," i.e., "verse that returns at regular intervals," i.e., refrain) refers particularly to two types of four-line stanzas called "gamlestev" (old stanzas) and "nystev" (new stanzas) and is considered a part of the lyrical genres. Additionally, "stev" is used synonymously with "slåtterim" (tune rhyme) or "slåttestev" (tune stanzas). The refrain in, for example, medieval ballads can also be called "stev" or "mellomsleng" (interlude) or "etterstev" (after-song) depending on its placement within the stanza.

Eilif Gundersen
musiker, Ål i Hallingdal
Juryens begrunnelse for tildelingen:

Sitt eget soloalbum, ”Sådagen” kom i 2008. En sjelden begivenhet fra en utøver på så spesielle instrumenter, at den vakte en viss oppmerksomhet også utenfor landets grenser. Så det ga mening at teksten, foruten å være på norsk også var oversatt til engelsk, spansk og fransk
